► What is your character's worst fear? It’s a tie. The first would be being alone -completely alone- with only himself to make decisions, do work, make money and decide how to use it. Being left to fight for himself and with no one to stop him from making poor decisions or getting into fights he can't win. Worse than that, not having any of the souls he owns or the prostitutes he 'employs' to make him feel appreciated and wanted. Not having anyone to even pretend to care for him. Being totally alone.
The second would be to be in prison. To be locked away with rough, ruthless men and have no power, clout, or respect to wield against them. Just being a pretty, fragile thing trapped among desperate animals looking for anything soft or feminine to take out their frustrations.
► What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why? Val is hypersexual. This is due to past trauma, sex addiction, and a life spent using sex as currency a tool for manipulation. He experienced frequent physical and sexual abuse at a very young age. He replaced a dangerous and abusive home life to have a dangerous and abusive life on his own as a runaway and sex-worker. It felt more like having control. Sex became a bartering chip, a marketable skill, and an escape. He uses it as a stand in for real emotional connection, as a distraction from problems, and as a way to keep others close. He also quietly believes it's the only thing he's good at.
► If your character could do anything with their life, what would they choose to do? He would be a full time artist and a trophy husband to someone rich sugar daddy. If he were asked, he would say he's doing what he wants with his life (or afterlife) and that being powerful, rich, and running a porn empire is where he belongs. While it's true, he does like directing movies and is comfortable, he would rather make all kinds of art and not have to worry if others want it or not. He'd like to be taken care of and doted on by someone who really loves him and will give him the world. He sometimes thinks about if he could have been a mom wife, or something like that.
► If your character was trapped in a small room with another character with no way out, how would they cope? What would they do? It depends on the other person, but only slightly. If the other person seems nice, or helpful, or smart enough to find away out; then Val will immediately become flirtatious and seductive and try to 'sell himself' to the other party. If he can make them want him, that gives him the ability to use them to escape or to have sex with them to distract from the situation.
If the other person seems unhelpful, mean, or aggressive in any way, Valentino will become aggressive in response. He will throw a toddler style tantrum that can include everything from crying, to throwing things, to physically attacking the other trapped individual.
He can also go back and forth between these two extremes with the same person in the same room over the course of days or even just hours.
► Who is the most important person in your character's life? How has that person impacted them? Vox is the most important person to Valentino, followed closely by Velvette. Vox is the first person to sleep with Val regularly without either of them trying to really control the other and Vox seems to see Val as useful for more than sex. Valentino only recently realized to what extent he has real feelings for Vox and is still heartbroken from finding out the feelings aren’t reciprocated. Vox has helped Valentino learn a lot about business, about public image, and about controlling his impulses. He's come to count on Vox to tell him the right thing to do and keep him on task.
► If your character were to take on a typical horror movie role, what role would they take? First victim, cynical hunter, last one standing? Or would they be the horror itself? On a good day, Val would be the girl who dies early while having sex. The mirror opposite of the pure and innocent 'final girl' is the problematic and slutty friend who is murdered for ignoring all of the warnings and choosing to get naked with her boyfriend instead of being wary of the danger.
When angry, he could easily be the monster, seducing young people to their doom or literally ripping people’s bodies apart for some perceived misdeed. A lot of things in horror movies are metaphors for sex, rape, violation, and consequences. Val can represent the worst parts of all of that, but he's much less metaphorical.
► Choose five horror-themed songs to create a playlist for your character, and detail why each song resonates with them.
• Poison (Alice Cooper) – Val feels no guilt or misgivings about using his powers to manipulate and control others. His saliva is literal poison, but he doesn't feel bad for the effects he causes.
• Love Me Dead (Ludo) – Mutual emotional and physical abuse between Val and Vox. They both know the other is a monster and both tear the other apart emotionally and physically. Still, they keep going back to each other.
• Prison Sex (Tool) – Not exactly a ‘horror-themed’ song, but horrific nonetheless. Valentino is a badly broken person. He experienced a lot of trauma and abuse as a child and again as a prostitute working under the abuse and violence of a pimp. He uses all of that painful history as an excuse to abuse others. Having the power and control to repeat the abuses committed against him feels like something he 'earned'. Why shouldn't others have to go through the same suffering to earn their place?
• Lifetime Achievement Award (Lemon Demon) – Valentino pushes his ‘employees’ to the absolute limit and often beyond. He will sweet-talk, overpower, and drug them to get them back in the game and keep them working. In Hell, even death is not an excuse to get out of work. The better he thinks one of his hoes is, the harder he works them. He believes Angel Dust is all but perfect, so he expects him to be able to meet and exceed any request or expectation. After all, Val has made him a star. He will push him to stay on top.
• Monster (Kanye West) – Valentino has done a lot of truly horrible things to a lot of people and continues to do so. He will step on almost anyone if it gets him success, respect and wealth. He doesn’t really care what he has to do or how it makes him look to others. As he sees it, all successful people are monsters. It’s the cost of entry.
• ((Bonus)) Oceanographer’s Choice (The Mountain Goats) – Ok...this one isn’t horror at all, but it’s such a fantastic illustration of Val and Vox’s relationship that I had to include it. Violent, passionate, potentially fleeting. Valentino is afraid of losing Vox but afraid to say so. Neither of them are willing to put their feelings into words and, instead, their entire relationship is heated, passionate physical interaction and an unspoken dependence.
Roommates?: I am honestly torn on this. Having a room alone would be the worst torture for Valentino. Having two roommates would be safer for the roommates than leaving him with one. If he’s left with one roommate, the other player would just have to be ok with being stuck with him.
Triggers/sensitive topics you'd like to avoid?: I’m fine with whatever! I have been deeply into horror since I was 6. I’ve seen a lot of shit.
